Hoffman: Imagine if Neil Armstrong landed on the moon today

Original Article – Chron.com – Owner Yonny Demeris reports two breaking news bulletins from Demeris BBQ:

For the first time since Demeris BBQ opened in 1964, the restaurant is offering combo meals. The combo meals include all of Demeris’ most popular items, like brisket sandwiches, ribs, smoked chicken, links and even …

The Hoffy Burger, voted Best Burger in Houston for five consecutive years by this column. And why not? Yonny and I slaved weeks in the Demeris test kitchen to concoct this mountain of meat.

The Hoffy Burger Combo is a half-pound of Certified Angus Beef, topped with cheddar cheese, thick bacon, a large French-fried onion ring and smoky barbecue sauce on a Sheila Partin sweet sourdough bun (it tastes like a doughnut – yum), plus crispy fries and a 32-ounce soft drink for the ridiculously low price of $9.85.

The platter includes free refills on soft drinks (dine-in only), plus free football tips from Yonny’s brother Frankie. Take the refills; ignore the pigskin picks.

Yonny was so excited about the Hoffy Burger Combo that he almost forgot his second piece of news:

He and his wife, Jenny, have their first baby – daughter Maria John Demeris.

Maria John?

“It’s a Greek tradition that a child carries the father’s first name as its middle name, whether it’s a boy or girl,” he said. “My real first name is John.”

I’ve known the guy 20 years. Never knew his first name was John. We’re not close.

Demeris BBQ has three locations:
2911 S. Shepherd, 6722 Marinette in Sharpstown and the new restaurant at 1702 W. Loop North across from Northwest Mall.
